JENNIFER BLOM STOCKHOLM FASHION WEEK SEPTEMBER 2022

THEME: SEA UMBRELLA

INSPIRATION: Jellyfish

Beautiful but also dangerous. After doing some research on the fascinating jellyfish, this sea beauty has become an inspiration.

The jellyfish have all sorts of design. Some look like ghosts and some like a floating silk chiffon circle skirt. Dangerous, yet fragile creatures that come in all shapes and with endless colourful silhouettes. They have no idea of their effortless beauty and grace and how unique they look.

These invertebrates do not have scales, gills or fins. They are made of 98 percent water, called jellyfish and they aren’t even a fish. They swim by closing and opening their bells. They rarely travel in groups. Many refer to a group of jellyfish as a bloom or a swarm. Seeing a group of these sea umbrellas are rare. They are lone drifters.

The jellyfish vision is surprisingly complex and they are one of the few creatures in the world to have a full 360-degree view of its environment. The box jellyfish has 24 eyes. Two of which are capable of seeing in colour.

Jellyfish are some of the oldest living creatures on the earth and some say they could originate before the dinosaurs. Jellyfish are adopting well to climate change and thrive in our oceans despite marine heat waves. They survive increased fishing, pollution and various other human influences. While corals and many marine organisms that build shells are considered the biggest losers of increasingly acidic oceans, the jelly fish don’t seem to be susceptible. They are winners, but at a high cost for our environment.

As the climate crisis is worsening, experts expect to see the jellyfish population increase in some areas and decrease in others. Where they increase, there will be an imbalance between jellyfish and other organisms.

Provoking, scary and still so endless in their beauty. The jellyfish have invaded my thoughts. While I shudder thinking about their effect on our climate, they have also become a creative inspiration.

I am immensely proud to present my new collection “SEA UMBRELLA". It has individuality, highly handcrafted styles, strong new silhouettes and vivid colours. A series of flowy silk dresses with delicate forms in organza and chiffons. Each dress has been designed with a conscious thought in mind, with the best silk and U-circular fabric. The colours are inspired by different sea creatures and Mother Nature.

The fabric qualities: Old and new. Pleating, hand crafted pieces, recycled silk materials,

The prints: Water colour paintings inspired by jellyfish seen through a digital lens, and with the elegance of Mother Nature.

Colours: Bright colour mix, dazzling green, orange, white with gold thread, light yellow and blue with metallic for a touch of contrast.

Texture: Various pleating techniques and different forms inspired by jellyfish.
